| | Watch back the first ever Future Independents conference | | Yesterday, the first ever edition of our new emerging music conference, Future Independents, went live to over 3,500 attendees from 72 countries! It was an amazing event, packed with expert advice for anyone looking to grow their business or level-up their career in music. You can now watch back the event for free on the Future Independents website here. This stream will be available for the next 7 days, until Friday 11 June. To find a particular session, there are time stamps below the videos (one video for Arena One and a second for Arena Two). We covered a range of key topics for independent music businesses including: - Setting Up Your Music Business For Success
- Funding
- Breaking An Artist in 2021
- Livestreaming
- Routes to Release
One highlight was our keynote discussion, which brought together three industry disruptors at the cutting edge of music business and culture: YouTube and Google's Global Head of Music, Lyor Cohen, Founder of Women in CTRL & CTRL Records and Chair of AIM, Nadia Khan, and Founder of Because Music, Emmanuel de Buretel. The wide-ranging discussion saw the speakers exchanging stories about their journey to the top of the music business and songs or artists that inspired them along the way, with Nadia Khan describing how Lethal Bizzle's 'Pow! (Forward)' energised her career, and Lyor Cohen looking back on fond memories with Warren G's 'Regulate' and De La Soul. Emmanuel de Buretel recounted his early career working with world-renowned artists like Daft Punk at Virgin Records, through to founding Because Music, and bringing different sounds from around the globe to the label, like the brilliant Amadou & Mariam. The power and ongoing success of independent music was a hot topic, with Lyor Cohen saying that "independent artists, independent labels are exploding on [YouTube]" and that "their CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the highest growth of any category". Watch the keynote discussion back here. In 'Create, Build, Win' (in association with Music Week), Sammy Andrews interviewed Zena White (Managing Director / SVP, Partisan Records) and Michelle Kambasha (Entertainment Publicist, Satellite 414) about their careers. Zena said "I was taking on roles that I love and felt passionate about – working with artists and continuing to build relationships. Taking on jobs and taking risks was key in helping me understand how to plan and build investments." Sharing her PR expertise in independent music, Michelle said: "There is an amazing story to tell in music made by independent artists...You don't want your press campaign to be lead by bad faith – you want the artists and labels to be interested in their own story!" 'Funding: Because You're Worth It' brought together funding experts including Remi Harris MBE who gave a funding overview, saying: "There are different options at different times in artists' careers. Music tuition and education then...those at the 'tipping point' where they are able to have a fully-fledged commercial career but need a subsidy to take advantage." You can find some of Remi's top tips for writing grant applications, 'Four Simple Secrets of Music Grant Funding' for free here and purchase her eBook 'Easy Money? The Definitive UK Guide to Funding Music Projects' here. Practical workshops from our Annual Platinum Partners: Amazon Music, Facebook, Merlin, PPL, Spotify and YouTube Music gave attendees the latest info on how to make the most of their services. As always, we'd like to give a huge thanks to each of these partners for their support, which helps to make our annual programme of events possible. You can listen to the 'Future Independents 2021' playlist made up of new music from yesterday's attendees here. What a special event! Thank you to everyone who attended and took part for being part of the independent community. | | | | | |
